Sikorsky’s Chemical Management Team is the
recipient of a United Technologies Environment, Health & Safety
(EH&S) award. Eight awards were presented to UTC teams whose
commitment to EH&S initiatives made a major positive impact
for the corporation last year. The 2004 awards – ranging from
innovation to continuous improvement to natural resource conservation
– were recently announced by Rick Bennett, UTC EH&S Vice
President. A committee of judges drawn from various UTC functional
areas determines the annual program winners. Sikorsky Chemical
Management Team members were awarded an “Innovation –Environment”
award for their work in reducing the cost of using chemicals. Their
work also includes developing improvements related to environmental
reporting and tracking, reducing waste and liability, and improving
the general process flow of chemical handling. At Sikorsky,
chemicals play a vital role in many aspects of company operations,
from helicopter fabrication to Engineering test activities, to facility
maintenance. Along with the benefits that come from the use of chemicals
come the concurrent costs, possible risks, and potential liability.
Sikorsky’s Chemical Management Program was implemented to
reduce these concerns and accentuate the positives – in particular
from an EH&S standpoint. The program will provide positive benefi
ts to all areas of Sikorsky Operations, including our offsite activities,
for years to come.
Congratulations to Sikorsky Chemical Management
team members: Robert Melnick, Sue Carey, and Steve Kopchick; UTC
employee Scott Little; and Haas Corp. employee Lee Sullivan. (Haas
is Sikorsky’s chemical service provider.)
